Brownbread Horse Rescue Open Day 13th Sept

Our second annual Open Day at the Brownbread Horse Rescue Centre, E Sussex, is the opportunity to meet our volunteers and the horses and ponies that "Friends" of the Charity have helped to support.

The brave, little Welsh stallion, Valleylake Sunbeam, better known round the yard as "Sonny" has reached the ripe old age of 34 yrs; he will give you a one-eyed greeting as he has recently undergone very successful surgery at Belle Equine Clinic.  (see him kissing Ashley Gardner in the picture before
his eye op)

We were anxious that he would get stressed out at the one and a half hour journey together with his overnight stay as normally he hates being confined.  However he loaded confidently and, with his bags packed, we set off in the knowledge that this was going to relieve the discomfort that he was beginning to endure. When we went to collect him the next day he was so happy tucking into his hard food that we joked about leaving him at the hospital.  He has also lost a lot of teeth so has to have access to food 24 hours a day. Lady, Lucy, Tammy and William have been well looked after by Tara and Becky at their yard, "Green Livery" but sadly they are having to come back to the Centre as Tara & Becky are moving on.

The three mares, 15.1hh / 15.3hh and in their twenties are looking for all year turnout on good grazing and it would be perfect if they could stay together.  Luckily William, the Welsh cob, also in his twenties, has found an ideal home nearby as a companion. Two mini ponies, mother and son, will be here on view and are looking for a long term loan.  They love people and are very amusing.  When rescued in the early Spring they had been systematically starved. Also present will be "Marilyn" the beautiful, shy palomino that was the subject of a successful RSPCA prosecution, following her untreated severe laminitis.  Her motto is, "you can look but you mustn't touch!"  She was collected from RSPCA livery in the Spring and settled in as though she had always lived here. Polo pony, Wendy, the black TB, is always a great favourite.

Then there is another Wendy, the black Shetland who was originally picked up with another off the roads near Horsham.  Honey, the mini pony, together with Highland ponies, Ribbons and Islesman will be providing pony rides; there is usually a queue for these.

The donkeys from Greece will also be wanting strokes and titbits. (Picture Donkeys rescued from Greece) The Dog Show grows bigger every year with both pedigree and novelty classes. Organisers, Vic and Julie oneyball, have managed to recruit the voluntary services of Show Judges, Mr R Carrina and Mrs Dani Clarke.  There are trophies and rosettes galore. (ring us for a schedule). The second-hand tack shop will be full of bargains and canny horse owners usually take the opportunity to buy their winter rugs early while the stocks Classic cars, archery, stalls, dancers, singers, children's corner all contribute to making the event a day out for all the family.

Brownbread Rescue's 24 hour helpline 01424 892381 is available should you come across an animal that you consider to be neglected or cruelly treated.

Our network of voluntary Field Officers continues to expand for which we are grateful and if you think you may be able to assist in this way give us a ring.
